Getting books into the hands of my students is my #1 priority. I tell the students that books on the shelves are not happy books. Happy books are the ones that are open and being read.
So...when I found out that school would be closed for 3 weeks due to COVID-19, I was determined to get as many books into the hands of my students as possible. I sent out an email to teachers informing them of times the library would be open and to just come on down or send students down.
It was crazy in the library during the open times with students checking out ARMFULS of books! By the end of the day, I had checked out 1,122 books!!! The students were so patient with long lines and my inability to help them find specific books. This picture doesn't quite do it justice to how long the lines were and just how many books were in the arms of our students, but it gives a general idea!
In addition to the 1,122 books checked out of the library, I know most teachers sent home many books from their classroom libraries as well. We are hopeful these books will help our students get through these next weeks.
My heart breaks reading that public libraries are closing their doors as well, but I'm encouraged by the authors and illustrators who are stepping up to get resources and stories out into the world. Check out the LINKS page for resources to use at home during this unprecedented time in our history.
